Nothing ruins a perfect summer evening like the whine of a mosquito in search of a warm meal. There are 176 species of these annoying insects in the United States and more than 3,000 species throughout the world, according to the American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) — enough to ruin any number of picnics by the pool. These little pests are considered one of the most deadly animals in the world. This is not because of the itchy bite, but mainly because of the diseases transmitted by the bite.
As we near World Mosquito Day (August 20) we thought some home remedies for avoiding or eliminating Mosquitoes might be in order.
Use a Repellent With DEET
Using a chemical repellant that contains 5 to 7 percent DEET helps ward off mosquitoes. At this low concentration, DEET repellants typically need to be reapplied every 90 minutes or so, according to the AMCA. DEET is effective when sprayed directly onto skin or clothing. Higher concentrations of DEET can also provide protection against ticks.
Use Essential Oils as a Repellent
If you’re concerned about using DEET on yourself or young children, you can also use products containing essential oils, known as botanicals. Several botanical repellants are registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), including Repel, a product that contains oil of lemon-eucalyptus.
Other Alternatives
- Use a fan to prevent mosquitoes from flying near you.
- Light an unscented or citronella candle.
- Light a mosquito coil or use a ThermaCell device (both contain synthetic insecticide).
- Use yellow “bug lights” instead of incandescent bulbs for outdoor areas.
- Keep your property clear of stagnant water by overturning empty buckets, planters, etc.
- If you have a pool, keep it properly chlorinated.
