Fall is upon on us with winter quickly behind. Adult stink bugs are now entering homes and buildings to seek shelter from the winter weather. Like many other overwintering pests, they can often congregate in large masses on the sides of homes and structures.
Stink bugs are named for their odor that they emit as a defense against predators. They are not known to bite people, but they should not be handled due to their odor they can release.
Stink Bug Prevention
Total control is virtually impossible to achieve, however there are techniques and methods that can be utilized to keep them out of structures, including:
- Seal cracks around windows, doors, electrical outlets, ceiling fans & light switches.
- Replace outdoor lighting with yellow bulbs, which are less attractive to stink bugs.
- Repair damaged window screens and screen attic and crawlspace vents.
- Use a vacuum to eliminate stink bugs indoors. Seal vacuum’s contents in a plastic bag and dispose of it immediately.
Stink Bug Treatment
OPC employs a Stink Bug Reduction Service which can help reduce the population of stink bugs in the home. However due to the nature of stink bugs and the constant pressure of these insects total elimination is impossible to achieve. Our service is designed to treat around all windows, doors and eaves of the structure to reduce the population entering the structure in the most common areas. This service is intended to reduce the amount of stink bugs inside the structure and unfortunately cannot prevent stink bugs from resting on the exterior of the structure. Exclusion work is also key for the prevention of stink bugs from entering the structure. Our handyman and remodeling division can provide help in this area.
